Childcare Cook

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Childcare Cook is responsible for providing cover/relief for the Childcare Cook during personal leave, annual leave, training, and professional development opportunities. The On-Call/Relief Childcare Cook will preparing and distribute a nutritious meal and two snacks daily for approximately 30-40 children. This position is also responsible for the cleanliness of the kitchen and equipment while ensuring the policies and procedures of Opokaa’sin Early Intervention Society. The On-Call/Relief Childcare Cook oversees operations of the food program while in the Centre, including hygiene, preparation, food distribution to rooms and all kitchen operations; ensures adherence to child-care food guidelines and all public health regulations.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follow all organizational policies of Opokaa’sin Early Intervention Society and prepare nutritious meals/snacks for enrolled children; prepares substitute items for children with restricted diets

  • Prepare, cook and distribute food that has been planned for by the Childcare Cook

  • Ensure meals and snacks are prepared and delivered according to program schedule

  • Practices safe food handling techniques in food preparation and storage, inhibit food spoilage/waste

  • Maintains a safe and sanitary kitchen, pantry and storage areas; washes items used for food preparation.

  • Maintain tidiness, wipe down counters and tables, do dishes and laundry as needed.

  • Perform physical labor as required including lifting heavy objects, cleaning, and standing for long periods of time, etc.

  • Maintain confidentiality of all information related to children, families and staff at all times.

 

REPORTING LINE: The position is directly accountable to the Early Intervention Team Leader.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Food Safety Certification, combination of education and experience (1+ years)

  • Alberta Childcare Certification (Assistant), or willing to obtain

  • Ability and experience working with Indigenous children and families

  • Awareness and understanding of Indigenous culture and barriers

  • First Aid/CPR, an asset

  • Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector

  • Child and Youth Information Module

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, positive communication

  • References (2)
